JP Morgan Highbridge Holds Latin Franchise

JP Morgan’s hedge fund business has taken stakes in a wide range of Latin American companies. One large holding is Arcos Dorados, which had an initial public offering in April this year, with JP Morgan as one of the underwriters. Arcos Dorados is a huge McDonald’s franchise with some 1,755 Latin American outlets.

The portfolio cuts across countries as well as industries in Latin America. Among the investments are Banco Bradesco, one of the big four banks in Brazil, and Grupo Televisa, Mexico’s TV company.

Last year Highbridge bought almost half-a-billion dollars of Cosan stock—- Cosan, a large Brazilian producer of sugar and sugar-based ethanol, is in a venture with Shell.

Highbridge acquired a majority stake in Gávea Investimentos, a Brazilian manager, in 2010. The Latin American investments include those made by Gávea.
